Second generation Honda CR-V was launched in 2001 with an all-new model, with the seventh generation Honda Civic as its base. Honda CR-V was using Honda K24A1 engine. In the US, this engine is capable to produce 160 HP with 220 Nm of torque. But in accordance with SAE regulations, the engine is now powered 156 hp with 220 Nm of torque. Second generation CR-V engine was already using i-VTEC technology, this resulting more economical fuel consumption. Successfully launched the CR-V makes Honda interested in producing a new product called Honda Element SUV.

Third generation CR-V was launched in 2007, a Honda CR-V redesign. Honda CR-V third generation has the latest generation of 2.4L Honda K engine family. 2.4L 4-cylinder inline engine is also mounted on the Honda Accord and Honda Element. It has a maximum power of 166 hp/5600 rpm and maximum torque 218 Nm/4200 rpm. Other petrol engine used is 2.0L i-VTEC SOHC engine (code K20A). There is also available a 2.2L i-CTDI diesel engine for Asian and European markets.
